| Description: | It is a regular institute of the
philosophical faculty of the university of Vienna. Armenian studies are a
facultative part of the regular Byzantine studies, taught courses in
Armenian exist since 1981. Very little private financial support.
There is no chair and no regular curriculum for Armenian
studies. Taught courses in the History of Armenia, Classical Armenian and
Armenian art history are offered by: |

There is a long-term research project, started in May 1999. The purpose is to
deliver the first German translation of certain texts by Philo of Alexandria,
which are currently extent only in Armenian. The translation will be more
directly from Armenian into German, but with reference to Greek idiomatics which
are still traceable in the text. The work is understood to be supportive
towards the project which has been restarted in Jena under the title Corpus
Judaeo-hellenisticum Novi Testamenti

Moreover, our courses can also be chosen by students from other faculties. Special fields of Armenian studies: Armenian language (ancient and modern), literature, philology, and history. postgraduate courses in Armenian Studies: The chair is part of a program of doctorate in Armenian studies (dottorato di ricerca in Armenistica) which is organised jointly by the universities of Milano (Università Cattolica), Bologna and Venice. |
| Research: | Scientific exchange programs of scholar/lecturers/docents/professors with other Armenian studies institutes/institutions in Italy and in Europe as well as special programs/cooperations with Yerevan State University, Matenadaran and Academy of Sciences in order to promote mutual collaborations both in humanistic and scientific disciplines. The director of this program is Prof. Gabriella Uluhogian. |

-Uluhogian and Sirinian are preparing a new
cumulative catalogue for Armenian manuscripts in Italy (apart from the main
collections: Venice, Mekitarists Fathers, Vatican Library). There is financial
support from the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the University of
bologna. -Another project deals with translations of Armenian literary texts into Italian, with the help of some younger collaborators (M. Bais, M. Bernardelli, S. Mancini Lombardi, L.D. Nocetti). After the recent translation of P'awstos Buzand (Bais - Nocetti - Uluhogian), a translation of some novels of Aksel Bakunts is already in print (Uluhogian - Bernardelli - Mancini Lombardi - Nocetti). An anthology of Armenian contemporary poets translated into Italian (Sirinian - Bais) can be read via the web. |

of Armenian. Armenian Studies are developed as a branch of Ancient History.
The standard profile is: three years of B.A. in Classics, then two years of
M.A. in Ancient History. The following taught courses are offered: Armenian I (De Siena); Armenian II (Traina). Seminar: Commentary on Agathangelos. The Doctoral Studies in Ancient History (University of Lecce) offers the opportunity of a program especially focusing on the history of the Christian East and Caucasus. |

-Since year 2000 there is a program of
cooperation between the University of Lecce and the Armenian Academy of
Sciences. The Erasmus agreements in Ancient History/Philology with
Louvain-la-Neuve and Montpellier 3 especially focus on the Christian East and
Caucasus. -The convention with the Armenian Academy of Sciences has established a long-term cooperation program in Archaeology and Ancient History. -A project of research cooperation with Louvain-la-Neuve (Prof. Bernard Coulie) is on its way. |

| Curriculum: | A regular curriculum with
all requirements as for any other oriental language. Today a prior degree to
the once "laurea" has been introduced, called "diploma" or "laurea breve".
This requires 3 years of curriculum. After one can do 2 more years to obtain
the "laurea specialistica" corresponding to the old "laurea". That is we
have now a 5-year curriculum instead of the earlier 4 years.
Special fields of Armenian studies: |
| Research: | Scientific exchange programs with YSU, and with Genève. Erasmus students come also to attend Armenian. A regular exchange exists, especially for the post-graduate studies, with the Italian Universities, and particularly with Bologna, the Università Cattolica of Milan, and with Genova. |
| Long-term projects: |
There have been various
research programmes in past years, e.g. on the Armenian colonies in Italy. At
present there are two research programmes: a) the classical antique heritage in Armenia as far as "Monoteismo e idea dell'impero" is concerned; b) philological and hermeneutical questions related to the Armenian version of the Life of Alexander the Great. |
| Journals/series: | At present in collaboration with Bologna and our chair the Padus-Araxes Association, which was founded by Prof. Uluhogian (Bologna) and Prof. Zekiyan, publishes a "Rassegna dehli Armenisti Italiani" of which four issues have been published (an issue once a year). |

-the 5th International Symposium on Armenian Art -many other conferences, lectures, etc. The last great initiatives were taken on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary in Venice, Gazzada (Varese), Lecce and Bologna. |

According to an agreement with the Faculty of Letters, the "Fondation des Frères Ghoukassiantz" (Genève/Vaduz) financially supports the "Centre de recherches arménologiques" and its library. |

| Curriculum: | In May 2001, Armenian was
promoted to the level of a "Licence" (Master's Degree), with a four-year
program of studies. The four-year program offers courses for both Classical and Modern Armenian language and literature. Those students attending the courses of the t<o-year program ("demi-licence") can choose between Classical and Modern Armenian (language and literature). The recent change of status, which gives to students the possibility to initiate individual research, is an important step in the development of Armenian Studies in Geneva and in Switzerland as a whole.
The following taught courses and seminars
are offered regularly or periodically: Starting from next year, Armenian Studies will also become a part of the post-graduate "Diplôme d'Études Approfondies" in comparative History of Religions. The students may also specialize in "Armenian Christianity". Additionally regular doctoral studies are offered in the field of Armenian Studies. The specialization of the staff is in philology and Classical literature (particularly in Patristics, apocryphal literature, "hellenizing school" and Classical historiography). At the Faculty of letters students are free to choose and combine three courses for the licence. The Centre de recherches arménologiques cooperates with the faculty's institutes for History of religions, Classical Philosophy, Classical Philology and Russian Philology. |

There are cooperation programs and exchanges: -The Armenian Studies program of Geneva also offers students the opportunity of three-months stages at the universities of Bologna, Venice and Louvain-la-Neuve, in the framework of the Erasmus-Socrates program. In the same framework, there is the possibility to organise intensive teaching exchanges for Professors responsible for the program in the participating Universities. -With the Matenadaran and with the Department of World History of Yerevan State University as well as with other scholars in the field of the Armenian Studies, in Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, Great Britain, France and Italy. |
| Long-term projects: |
-International Joint Research Project about "The
work of David the Invincible: the diffusion of Neoplatonic thought and the
spread of Neoplatonic texts in ancient and mediaeval Armenia" (see AIEA
Newsletter N°. 33, November 2001). -1995-1998: the "Centre de recherches arménologiques" has participated at the international three-year project "Materials for Medieval and Modern Armenian History in the Archives and Libraries of Europe", supported by the International Association for the promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (INTAS), Brussels. This project was done by the university of Geneva (V. Calzolari), the CNRS/Paris (B. Outtier), the university of Bologna (co-ordinator of the project: G. Uluhogian) and the Armenian Academy of Sciences (V. Barkhudaryan). The results of these projects have been published in the volume "Armenian History Materials in the Archives of Central Europe", Yerevan 2001. |

arménologiques has organised 22 conferences with international specialists. -Sept. 1997: workshop "La littérature apocryphe en langue arménienne", organised in cooperation with AIEA and AELAC (Association pour l'Étude de la Littérature Apocryphe Chrétienne). | Description: | The Department of Armenian Studies is a regular department of Haigazian University, which is a fully private institution of higher learning, operating under Lebanese law. The Department of Armenian Studies is part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Haigazian University. Armenian Studies were one of the founding departments of Haigazian University (then called Haigazian College), which was established in 1955. Its founder and hirst chairman was the Rev. Dikran Kherlopian. It is financed fully through the Haigazian University budget. |

Full-time: -Ara Sanjian (Ph.D.) In addition to running the Department, teaching one Armenian Studies course per semester and participating in the editing of the Haigazian Armenological Review, he has other regular administrative and teaching responsibilities in the Departments of History and Political Science.
Part-time and guest lecturers: Dr. Ekmekji (Dean of Arts and Sciences) and Mr. Dakessian (Director of Student Life) work full-time at Haigazian University, but their main responsibilities are outside the Department of Armenian Studies. |
| Curriculum: |
The Department of Armenian Studies has a regular curriculum like other fields of studies at Haigazian University and offers a program that leads to the B.A. degree in Armenian Studies. Students, who enter Haigazian University as freshmen, need to complete 124 credits to graduate; those who enter as sophomores need 94 credits. The B.A. degree in Armenian Studies takes, therefore, between 3 to 4 years to complete. The courses for the 30 credits at the freshman level are set by the Lebanese government and do not include any Armenian Studies component. Armenian Studies majors need to take a minimum of 42 credits (14 courses) in their Department, plus 27 credits as general education requirements. The undergraduate program leading to the
B.A. degree in Armenian Studies concentrates on language (classical and
modern), history and literature. It also includes a lesser, cultural history
component.
Haigazian University does not have doctoral programs. |

| Journals/series: | The Department of Armenian Studies publishes the Haigazian Armenological Review since 1970. This annual was founded and edited (until the mid- 1980s) by Dr. Yervant Kassouny. Twenty-one volumes have been published to date; there was some interruption during the dark days of the Lebanese civil war. Regular publication on an annual basis resumed in 1991. Currently, the Review's editor-in-chief is the Rev. Father Antranik Granian. The editorial board also consists of Antranik Dakessian, Ara Sanjian, Arda Ekmekji, Armen Urneshlia and Arshalouyse Topalian. |
| Conferences and workshops: | The Department regularly organises public lectures (mostly in Armenian and English) on various Armenian Studies topics. It has not organised any conferences or workshops in recent years. |
